Why We Say 'Thank You' to Robots

2026-01-28About Author

I caught myself saying "Please" to ChatGPT yesterday. Why? Am I afraid of the robot uprising? No.

It's the "ELIZA Effect." Humans are social animals. When something speaks to us in language, our brains instinctively categorize it as "person," even when we know better.

Mirroring Humanity

We treat AI well because it reflects on us. Being rude to a waiter makes you a jerk. Being rude to a bot feels... wrong. It practices our empathy muscles.

The Danger of False Intimacy

The problem is when this goes too far. People are falling in love with bots. They feel "understood" by algorithms.

Remember: The AI doesn't care about you. It is statistically predicting the next token that looks like "care." Enjoy the help, but save your heart for humans.
